What is Alcohol Rehabilitation?

Alcohol addiction is a compilation of negative behaviors that over time transform into a downward spiral of abusive patterns and unwelcome consequences.  Alcohol is extremely addictive.  It directly affects the pain killing and pleasure centers of the brain.  As the body rids itself of the drug the negative side effects induce physical and mental craving.  The relentless craving creates the addictive personality.  The more a person drinks the more they desire and need the alcohol to maintain the "positive" symptoms.  Unfortunately, while alcohol might feel like it is therapeutic, it is actually a poison; even in small amounts it is a danger to the human body.  It disrupts the functioning of vital organs, damages the brain, and places the user in harmful circumstances.  For those who have developed a dependency upon alcohol it can be a life threatening situation.  Alcohol abuse tends to progress.  The only way to stop the progression is by alcohol rehabilitation.

What is alcohol rehabilitation?  Alcohol rehabilitation is taking action.  It is the recovery of one's life. It is the acceptance of personal responsibility.  It is the dedication and willingness to learn how to be a better person.  It is the desire to live.  Alcohol rehabilitation is a process of steps designed to teach people how to survive in today's society without giving in to the prevalent emotions of fear and despair.  Rehabilitation rewards the individual with confidence.  It provides the means of creating a new life; a life based on honesty and compassion, instead of betrayal and lies.  It takes the desperate actions of the addict and converts them into positive, self-assured responses that bring satisfaction, meaning, and hope.

To fully embrace alcohol rehabilitation one has to come to terms with oneself.  It is only through honesty that the truth can be revealed and the entirety of the situation can be examined and dealt with.   This is a very difficult thing to do.  It is painful to evaluate a life that is riddled with the consequences of negative actions and behaviors.  In the life of any alcoholic or those suffering from alcoholism, there are moments that we wish we could take back.  For some of us the memories are so embarrassing that we choose not to remember them at all.  Instead we restructure our thinking.  We  select the memories that minimize our use and the rest are filed away into the subconscious.  Over time friends and family learn not to contradict this thinking.  It is easier for everyone involved to simply pretend that the situation is not happening.  This is called denial. 

There comes a time in every alcoholic's life when it is obvious that there is a problem.  It can no longer be ignored.  There are some people that embrace this concept.  Their mentality and emotions have become so eroded over the years that self destruction is a trained response.  An accumulation of horrific memories have brought despair and they believe they are not deserving of help.  They welcome the end.  Without alcohol addiction treatment these individuals do not have a chance.  The situation will continue to decline until the resulting damage is irrevocable.
