The following is a summary of evaluations over the last 30 years of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program.

Drug deterioration surveys completed in the 1970s of graduates of the Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Program.

The behavior of parolees from several institutions was placed in simple tabulations:
  • While in prison, 17 of 19 inmates who participated in the Narconon Drug Rehab Program were paroled. 12 of these 17 (70%) reported as clean. 2 parolees were not found, 1 was suspended from the program, and 2 had been arrested for the use of cocaine. This was reported by the California Dept. of Corrections.
  • Of 25 Narconon students 23 were paroled, 18 (78%) of which remained clean, 3 were at large, and 20 had been arrested as reported by the California Institute for Women.
  • Of 76 Narconon drug rehab participants, 32 were found who were released from prison. 24 of those 32 (75%) remained clean and sober as reported by the Arizona Correctional Authority.

California Youth Authority

The effectiveness of Narconon Drug Rehab and how it changed behavior at the Youth Training School was examined by the California Youth Authority. They monitored objective measures of behavior such as the grade being achieved, the number of rule infractions, and the number of restrictions handed out.

Following the study, Dan Fauchier of the Youth Authority stated, “Although [the survey] results should not be viewed as positive proof of Narconon effectiveness, they do seem to strongly indicate that Narconon is having a very positive and beneficial effect in increasing the socially-desirable behavior of its participants both in trade classes and on the living units.”

  Up to 5 Months (Pre-Narconon) After 5 Months (Post-Narconon)

Minnesota Reformatory

In 1978 Posthumos and Snowden evaluated the Narconon Drug Rehab Program Participants at the Minnesota State Reformatory for Men. They evaluated the change in behavior of Narconon participants over time, and used the behavior patterns of individuals pre-treatment as the control.

The behavioral measures for objective monitoring included the amount of rule infractions of which the inmates were found guilty, how many days of privileges were lost, and how many days inmates were segregated from the population due to rule infractions.

Effectiveness of Narconon Minnesota Prison Program
Narconon Students(36) Pre(6 months) During Post(5 months)
# Guilty Findings* 48 30** 29**
Days Lost Privileges 274 177 232
Days Segregated 552 257 395
* All results are number per 100 inmates per 30 days.
** Statistically significant improvement (p<0.01)
RESULTS:
Minnesota State Reformatory for Men.

During the Narconon Drug Rehab Program study, 38% of guilty findings decreased. 40% decreased after the study. As a comparison, a random selection of 10% of the prison population was tabulated. The Narconon program had reversed the trend of guilty findings having increased by 77%.

Delaware Correctional Center

In 1975 an evaluation of the Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Program was done inside the Delaware Correctional Center. The people in the study were serving longer sentences and generally more violent than the average prison population. 58% of the participants had been convicted of major and/or violent crimes in contrast to the 23% of the total inmate population.

The Narconon Drug Rehab Program graduates post release arrest rates were compared to the arrest rates of a group of parolees that were randomly selected. Out of the 86 parolees that participated in the Narconon Program, 4 were not found and 2 had died. Out of the parolees who completed more than one Narconon course 84% of those studied had no arrest during the period of follow-up. 64% of the population used as a control had been re-arrested during their parole period.

[These studies in the 1970s show great and strong improvements in those studied. But, they were done prior to the development of the Narconon New Life Detoxification Program, which has shown a strong Improvement in recidivism rates in a 1997 study.]

Independent Evaluations

The 1985 Spanish Study

In 1985, an evaluation of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program was done by an independent sociology group. Madrid’s Town Hall Social Services Dept, the Spanish Ministry of Health, and the National Institute of Social Services had commissioned the same group to do studies on drug issues.

The study showed that 78.4 percent of the people who completed the Narconon program remained off drugs. Overall, 69.2 percent of the people contacted (including those who done only a portion of the program) were still off drugs.

In conformity with the earlier studies, this study showed a remarkable effect on criminal activity. Prior to the program, 62.2 percent of the Narconon students had committed robberies. Seventy three percent had been dealing drugs. After the Narconon program no criminal activities (0 percent) were reported by any graduates.

Russian Study

In 1998, an “Expertise of the Drug Rehabilitation Program at Narconon Moscow” was prepared by U.D. Gurochkin M.D., N.N. Grigoriev (Lecturer, Russian Interior Ministry), and V.V. Khlystoun (Special Correspondent “Trud” [Labor]). Studying the files and medical documents of 32 students who had completed the Narconon program between 1995 and 1998, their research included health examinations, evaluation of objective and subjective data following program completion including drug screens, and evaluation of the students’mental condition.

Their final “Conclusions,” state, “Professional study of Narconon materials and the medical-psychological investigation of 32 patients has shown: 1. The Narconon Method’s ratio of efficiency is 72%, demonstrated by study of the patient histories. 2. Professional inspection of patients’ physical and mental condition has shown significant improvements. 3. The Narconon Program can be recommended to the State Narcology Institutes of the Ministry of Health for application.”
